HOME - ALEPPO TÜRKÇE Inscribed Portal Lion and Sphinx Fragments During the 2004 and 2005 excavations at the Aleppo citadel, fragments of an adjoining lion and sphinx statues were found as fallen from their base by the west wing of the south entrance of the Storm God temple's cella. There is an incised 13-line Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription (ALEPPO 7) on the statues. The lines of the inscription are inscribed on the right side of the lion and the left side of the sphinx. In their original condition, the lion and sphinx statues are estimated to be 2.6 and 2.15 meters, respectively. The broken name of the Palistin king mentioned in the first line of the inscription is likely to be Taita. Due to damage, the context of the inscription is not clear, but it mentions the city of Karkamiš and the land of Egypt. It is dated to the 11th century BCE. |
