Columbase with a pair of sphinxes

One of two double-sphinx columnbases, both of which were found in situ, originally supporting the two columns of the entrance of the Hilani III building. Carved of a single basalt block, it measures about 1 meter in height, 1.55 meters in lenght and 1.25 meters in width. It was broken in half and hollowed inside for ease of transportation shortly after the excavation. Double sphix bases are very similar in style to another one found in nearby Sakçagözü. This base is in Istanbul Archaeology Museum, while the other one is in Vorderasiatsches Museum in Berlin.
