Gözecik

The late Hittite-style basalt portal lion was found in the village of Gözecik in the Divriği township of Sivas province. It was moved from a nearby hill to the village center by the villagers sometime after 1990, and the head section of the lion was apparently broken during this move. It is about 2 meters long and 1.5 meters high. Rough details of the lion suggest that it was not entirely finished. The round shape on the right side may indicate a secondary use. It has been roughly dated to between the 10th and 8th centuries BCE. Gözecik is one of the northernmost sites of late Hittite artifacts. The lion is currently displayed in the Sivas Museum.
